The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) is an independent non-profit think tank based in Berlin. Our mission is to improve global governance through research, policy advice and debate.

GPPi seeks a part-time or full-time communications assistant or associate, who will join our team in Berlin.

The successful candidate will help us communicate our research findings, policy advice and ideas to different audiences (clients and other officials in the public sector, journalists, politicians, and the wider public – in Germany, Europe and worldwide). The core of the role is helping to manage GPPi’s social media channels, website and various microsites. This includes writing short copy for those channels (in English), helping to develop them further, and – if interested and qualified – supporting visualization and graphic design projects and/​or helping us experiment with new audio and video formats on the side.

We are looking for a creative self-starter with extreme attention to detail, a knack for writing crisp messages, and the tech-savviness to work with a range of desktop and web-based tools (including our current CMS). You should have a talent for squeezing complicated ideas and policy arguments into 280 characters – and enjoy doing so!

Key roles and responsibilities

As part of the small GPPi communications team, the successful candidate will:

  • Help manage GPPi’s website (www​.gppi​.net) and microsites (e.g., www.ggfu​tures​.net).
  • Create compelling written (and, increasingly, audiovisual) content for GPPi’s publications and digital communication channels, particularly our Twitter and Facebook presence.
  • Help develop our social media strategy and presence further, including by closely following developments in the media landscape and contributing new ideas.
  • Help manage the content pipelines for several accounts across platforms and work with GPPi colleagues to support the social media rollout of publications, events, etc.
  • Track and analyze the key performance metrics of GPPi’s website, active microsites, and social media posts and channels, using common analytical tools like Google Analytics.
  • Help publish and develop GPPi’s quarterly e-mail newsletter.
  • Support the continuous development of GPPi’s website.
  • Support the production of GPPi’s digital and print publications, including by conceptualizing visualizations, creating information graphics and other creative assets, and helping with the layouting process (optional, if interested and qualified).
  • Help tend to, steer and develop GPPi’s brand, including by advising colleagues and external partners on brand-related questions.

Experience and skills expected of the post holder

The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong academic background (BA, MA or equivalent) in a relevant field such as journalism, marketing, communications, public policy or political science/​international relations.
  • An interest in and familiarity with GPPi’s main issue areas and fields of work.
  • A knack for clear, compelling language and outstanding writing skills in English (being a native speaker is a plus).
  • A passion for and experience in using major social media platforms, especially Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
  • Demonstrated experience in website management, including in handling common web content management systems.
  • Creativity, sound editorial judgment, a good eye for what’s on brand, and extreme attention to detail (seriously).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • A passion for and the ability to quickly adapt to new technology.
  • The ability to work independently within a team context.

Additional skills that will be considered a plus:

  • An eye for design and experience in graphic design, particularly in working with desktop publishing programs (InDesign) and producing information graphics (Illustrator);
  • Photography and/​or photo editing skills;
  • Familiarity with web architecture, development and responsive design;
  • Experience in producing and publishing podcasts;
  • Experience in working with video editing software;
  • Command of languages beyond English, particularly German (additional languages are always a plus).

Other useful information

This position will generally require you to work out of our Berlin office, and to make a commitment for at least one year. Any part-time arrangement should cover at least 20 hours per week. Moreover, preference will be given to a candidate who can distribute working hours evenly over the course of the week.

Starting date: no later than September 1, 2019.
