The Basel Institute on Governance is an international and independent not-for-profit organisation working worldwide with the public and private sector to counter corruption and other financial crimes and to improve the quality of governance. Registered as a Swiss foundation with headquarters in Basel, the Institute operates globally and maintains field operations around the world.
The Basel Institute’s Green Corruption programme focuses on applying our in-house expertise and experience in relation to the prevention of corruption and the enforcement of anti-corruption and anti-money laundering standards to the environmental sector. The programme covers corruption and financial crime related to the illegal trade in wildlife, forestry and timber products, fish and mining.
The role
The Green Corruption programme is looking for two IWT Integrity Risks Consultants with a criminal investigations or criminal law background to support an ongoing project assessing the corruption risks along the IWT criminal investigations and prosecutions processes in Peru and Malawi. We are looking for experts with a deep understanding of criminal justice procedures and IWT. Given ongoing travel restrictions, we hoping to find highly reliable individuals who are able to work independently.
The Consultant will work with the Green Corruption Team Leader as well as other Green Corruption Team members based in Basel to implement this programme.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Desk-based research – Conduct research in target countries regarding the criminal investigations process and actors engaged in criminal investigations related to IWT.
- Research methods design – Provide input on the methods and data collection instruments.
- Data collection – Conduct in person interviews (whenever possible) and apply data collection instruments to select participants in their respective country.
- Analysis – Assist in the interpretation of results.
- Provide additional professional input to ensure the correct implementation of the program
Experience and skills
Qualifications:
- University degree in law, political sciences, international relations, criminology or related.
- Solid understanding of criminal procedures as applied to Illegal Wildlife Trade in target countries.
- At least 3 years of experience working in the field of security or criminal investigations, either as consultant or law enforcement officer.
- Current civil servants are not eligible for this position.
Skills required:
- Experience writing reports.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, remotely and across time zones while
- maintaining close contact with the team, communicating transparently and
- proactively, and reliably adhering to timelines.
- Problem-solving attitude.
