Centre for London is a politically independent think tank focused on the big challenges facing London. It aims to help London build on its long history as a centre of economic, social, and intellectual innovation and exchange, and create a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable city. Through its research and events, the Centre acts as a critical friend to London’s leaders and policymakers, promotes a wider understanding of the challenges facing London, and develops long-term, rigorous and radical solutions for the capital.

The role

We are looking for two Interns to join us for 6 months. They will play an important role in the administration and delivery of the Conference, as well as supporting the delivery of the wider events programme. The London Conference has a reputation for excellence and is a great piece of work to have on your CV. Delivery of the conference will expose your work to a wide variety of influential Londoners from every sector, many of whom you will be in direct contact with.

Key responsibilities and tasks

Your core tasks will be to support the Events Manager with event planning duties (e.g. attendee list, attendee communications, catering and AV planning) and delivering events on the day (e.g. registration, room set up). There will be the potential to take on independent responsibility for some areas.

Example tasks for The London Conference:

  • Administer/update conference email inbox, recording RSVPs and responding to enquiries;
  • Administer/update conference website;
  • Assist with general logistical arrangements to ensure smooth running on the day;
  • Prepare and send speaker invitations;
  • Liaise with speakers, sponsors and stakeholders;
  • Liaise with contractors after they are hired (AV, catering, etc.);
  • Research sponsors/speakers/exhibitors;
  • Recruit and train volunteers to assist on the day;
  • Act as Volunteer Coordinator or Speaker Coordinator/Runner at the conference.

Experience and skills

Key skills & experience:

  • Prior experience assisting with event delivery.
  • Highly organised. Able to balance and prioritise multiple tasks, often to urgent and competing deadlines.
  • Professional and confident communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Able to liaise with senior people (e.g. speakers).
  • A fast learner. Able to show initiative and adapt quickly to new challenges.

Other important skills & experience:

  • Positive and helpful attitude.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong IT proficiency, including MS Office (essential), databases, especially SalesForce (desirable) MailChimp (desirable) and
  • WordPress/other CMS (desirable).
  • Able to understand your role within a team, and work with others to achieve a collective goal.
  • An interest in public policy and/or cities (essential), with some understanding of London government and issues (desirable).
  • Some understanding of think tanks and their role in policy debate.
