The R Street Institute—a free-market think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C., and with regional offices across the country—seeks an energetic fellow in finance, insurance and trade policy, with an emphasis on property and casualty insurance. The role
Your typical day at R Street may include researching and writing policy papers, op-eds and blog posts about significant topics related to insurance policy; engaging directly with leaders of key policy issue areas; and interacting with a range of national and local media outlets to educate and provide context on the most impactful insurance, trade and finance policy areas.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Help conceive and coordinate high quality, highly credible and timely research projects.
- Adapt policy, engagement and communication strategy in a fluid legislative and regulatory landscape.
- Work with government affairs and communications teams to identify and engage with target audiences.
- Write a mix of op-eds, regulatory comments and policy papers to help solve difficult problems and translate complex ideas in insurance, trade and finance policy.
- Collaborate with internal and external scholars to move the policy conversation forward.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest research in insurance, trade and finance policy.
- Passion for free markets and public policy.
- Periodic lookout shifts to guard against ninja infiltration.
Experience and skills
- Knowledge and experience in property and casualty insurance.
- Strong, proven writing skills.
- Strong research skills and willingness to understand all sides of an issue.
- Exceptional analytical and communications skills with the ability to synthesize complex information quickly and explain complicated concepts clearly and concisely.
- Comfort in speaking with the press.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with subject matter experts for insights and opinions.
- Superior interpersonal skills and strong team orientation.
- Passion for free markets and limited, effective government.
- Ability to serve effectively in a cross-functional role, working with several different R Street organizational units.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage competing interests and priorities.
- No particular educational background is required: proven track record to achieve results is more meaningful than credentials.
