The Basel Institute on Governance is an international and independent not-for-profit organisation working worldwide with the public and private sectors to counter corruption and other financial crimes and to improve the quality of governance. The Basel Institute’s Green Corruption programme focuses on applying our in-house expertise and experience in relation to the prevention of corruption and the enforcement of anti-corruption and anti-money laundering standards to the environmental sector. The programme covers corruption and financial crime related to the illegal trade in wildlife, forestry and timber products, fish and mining.
The role
The Green Corruption programme is looking for a Fisheries Governance and Corruption Specialist to advise, provide input and support the implementation of various programme activities under the USAID Integritas project in Indonesia. The project will focus on corruption prevention in the field of fisheries and forestry.
We are looking for a candidate who has expertise in fisheries governance and crime issues. S/he will work with several divisions at the Basel Institute, the team in Indonesia, as well as the project’s lead partner Kemitraan, Indonesia Corruption Watch and Transparency International Indonesia. Intellectual curiosity, excellent collaboration skills and flexibility are key traits of a successful applicant.
This position will be based in Indonesia. Only Indonesian nationals are eligible to apply. The Specialist will be contracted for a 12-month period, which, upon satisfactory performance, could be extended further. The Specialist reports to the Senior Programme Officer, Green Corruption programme – Indonesia.
Key roles and responsibilities
Research
- Participate in or lead research activities on the intersection of anti-corruption/governance and fisheries.
- Conduct fieldwork, process data, draft reports and present findings to mixed audiences, including those with little expertise in the topic.
Advise
- Work with natural resource and law enforcement agencies as well as NGO partners to strengthen their efforts to address corruption in the field of marine affairs and fisheries.
- Serve as a conduit for the continued consortium and in-house education on fisheries-related trends to both other team members and the Institute.
Manage and administer
- Together with the rest of the team, ensure that donors have access to high-quality reporting on technical issues and programmatic developments.
- Implement all activities in line with donor requirements.
Experience and skills
- Proven expertise in the fields of fisheries-related governance and corruption required, including:
Fisheries supply chains
Institutional setup and governance structures of fisheries and marine affairs
Integrity risks in fisheries and marine affairs
Fisheries enforcement efforts, techniques, regulatory frameworks and their strengths and limitations.
Geographical and geopolitical developments. - Strong network among conservationists in both government and civil society.
- A solid understanding of governance and anti-corruption efforts is preferable.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills in English.
- Required: flexibility, intellectual curiosity, excellent collaborative skills.
