The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) is a Berlin-based, independent think tank and leading European provider of policy-oriented research on contemporary China. Founded by Stiftung Mercator, MERICS analyzes current trends in China’s international relations, economy, politics, and society and their implications for Europe.

MERICS’ International Relations Program focuses on China’s rapid rise in the global economy, international organizations and geo-strategic relations. The program analyzes whether and how this new center of power can continue to be integrated into international rules and responsibilities. To lead the program, MERICS seeks to fill the following position as soon as possible.

Key roles and responsibilities

Program leadership and institutional responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a demand-driven research agenda on the impact of China’s foreign relations on Europe and the world
  • Advise and manage the program’s staff, fellows and partners
  • Work as part of the institute’s management team in project development, fundraising and resource planning
  • Design, lead and participate in team research across programs

Research and analysis

  • Conduct original research on China’s global geo-economic, political and security expansion, including the implications for Europe
  • Lead the team in the production of authoritative reports, policy analyses, academic publications and other products related to core program themes, including domestic drivers and global patterns of China’s foreign economic and security policy, and China’s approach to international institutions and international relations.

Project development and outreach

  • Serve as an expert commentator in the media and engage in public outreach through op-eds, public talks, social media and other outlets
  • Act as a thought leader in public events and engage in consultative meetings with policy makers and stakeholders

Experience and skills expected of the post holder

  • A graduate degree, with a Ph.D. in a relevant field preferred
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional work experience
  • Existing networks with European decision makers are an advantage
  • Project management experience and a fundraising track record are strongly preferred
  • Ability to train, supervise and support the work of team members
  • Fluent professional English skills, a strong knowledge of modern Chinese (minimally HSK 4 or equivalent) as well as knowledge of or willingness to learn German or at least one other European language

MERICS offers a stimulating work environment in a dynamic multi-disciplinary and international team. The positions will be based in Berlin with a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications as well as excellent benefits. Appointments will initially be for a fixed term of two years with a possible extension until December 2023. The probationary period will be six months. Depending on achievements and experience, the successful candidate will be appointed at the level of Head or Director of the program. The Head or Director of program will be directly responsible to the Director of the institute.
