Third Way is a national think tank that champions modern center-left ideas.

Our work is grounded in the mainstream American values of opportunity, freedom, and security. But we identify as center-left, because we see that space in U.S. politics as offering the only real path for advancing those ideals in the century ahead.

Our agenda is ambitious, aspirational, and actionable. It is built on the bedrock belief that for political movements to succeed in our political system, they must relentlessly re-imagine their policies, strategies, and coalitions.

We are fighting for opportunity, so everyone has the chance to earn a good life; progress on social issues, so all have the freedom to live the lives they choose; and security, so we are protected from 21st century global threats.

The role

Third Way is seeking a Senior Advocacy Manager for its Clean Energy Program to be the lead staffer overseeing advocacy outreach, partner relationships, and public opinion research for Third Way’s climate and clean energy focused work. The position will be primarily responsible for implementing an outreach and advocacy strategy, in coordination with our communications and policy teams, to build policymaker, NGO, and targeted influencers’ support for our all-clean energy technologies and innovation climate agenda.

Key roles and responsibilities

As the Senior Advocacy Manager for Clean Energy, a typical day might include:

  • Overseeing the implementation of the Clean Energy advocacy strategy, and working with the Clean Energy Program Deputy Director and Senior Vice President to evaluate and adjust our strategy and tactics to ensure we are on track to meet our goals;
  • Engaging with external allies and targeted stakeholders to build support for our policy and communications goals;
    Managing advocacy staff;
  • Writing and editing compelling products designed to help us achieve our strategic goals;
  • Developing and overseeing public opinion research, in coordination with external consultants and the Third Way Politics team;
  • Working closely with our communications team on messaging; and
    Performing other relevant duties as needed.

Experience and skills

This might be the job for you, if you:

  • Have a minimum of five years of relevant experience working in advocacy, campaigns, or polling, a bachelor’s degree and preferably a graduate degree;
  • Have strong quantitative skills and significant experience with campaigns, public opinion research, and the electorate;
  • Have a proven record to write compelling and high-impact products;
  • Managed high-performing staff to reach ambitious short, medium, and long-term goals as part of a larger team;
  • Have strong public presentation skills and comfort speaking regularly on behalf of Third Way to the media and general audiences;
  • Have strong political instincts, results-oriented, and are able to keep multiple projects on track;
  • Enjoy working in a extremely collaborative organization – with both Third Way senior management, policy, and communications staff;
  • Enjoy thinking outside-the-box, challenging existing orthodoxies, and developing new ideas; and
  • Enjoy being passionate about achieving major federal policy solutions to address climate change.
