The Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem is a Palestinian NGO founded in 1990 with its main office in Bethlehem in the West Bank. ARIJ is guided by three main principles in carrying out its mission: (1) the institute must enjoy the cooperation and support of Palestinian national institutions, local universities, grassroots organizations, professionals and other institutions working in research, technology transfer, and extension services, using local experts and encouraging teamwork between scientists; (2) research projects must be determined in coordination with and be useful to the community; and (3) it must be able to effectively disseminate information and knowledge through organizations already serving the community. ARIJ's aims are to (1) catalyze coordination and cooperation between various groups and institutions working in economic development and facilitate the creation of a sectoral planning unit; (2) actively participate in the economic development of the community by taking greater advantage of natural resources; (3) provide the technological and scientific knowledge, skills, and facilities needed by the community; (4) help in identifying and understanding community problems that could be alleviated by science and technology; (5) play an active role in developing human resources to adapt and use new technologies; (6) generate income-producing opportunities for the community through technology transfers; and (7) develop, adapt, and improve local technologies.
