Founded in Kathmandu in 1991 and registered as an NGO in 2002, Martin Chautari (MC) is dedicated to enhancing Nepal's public sphere and strengthening the social contract between the state and its citizens. MC achieves its mission through five interconnected pillars: its renowned bi-weekly discussion seminars—the world's oldest continuous institutional series on Nepal—alongside rigorous empirical research, mentoring programs for young researchers, extensive publishing of books and major journals, and an open-access public reference library holding over 27,000 items. Governed by an executive committee, MC fosters inclusive, analytically rigorous dialogue among academics, activists, and policymakers.
