CNEAS was established for the purpose of promoting regional studies of Northeast Asia and Japan. There are three main aspects to CNEAS's mission: (1) creating new methodologies in regional studies by developing research methods that integrate cultural and scientific aspects through a combination of studies covering humanities and natural science; (2) promoting academic studies to clarify regional circumstances and conditions as well as such individual circumstances as race, history, society, culture, language, natural history, resources, and the environment and to determine relationships between these factors (investigating exchanges and coexistence between different nations and socio-cultures based on the viewpoint of the coexistence of nature and man); and (3) creating a database to hold the results of research that are useful both now and in the future and that can play an important role in the study of Northeast Asian regions. In addition, CNEAS ensures that the results of its research and the database itself are made available to society in order to contribute to the promotion of mutual exchanges between regions and provides an academic foundation for the establishment of relevant policies.
