The institute was founded in 1965 under the name "Karl Bräuer Institute" (KBI). In 2013 the company was renamed "German Taxpayers' Institute of the Federation of Taxpayers" (DSi). The German Taxpayer Institute is a non-profit registered association. They fund their research work mainly from contributions from the state associations of the Federation of Taxpayers and donations from citizens. The institute publishes its work in several publication series.
