HPI, established as a research unit in the Hiroshima City University, engages in a variety of research activities related with peace, inspired by the city's historical experience as the first city in the world to be devastated by a nuclear weapon. HPI devotes itself to the task of contributing to the development of a peaceful local community and the realization of world peace by conducting research on nuclear disarmament, with a view to achieving the ultimate goal of completely eliminating nuclear weapons and peacefully resolving problems confronting international society. HPI also strives to contribute to the progress of peace research around the world by working in close cooperation with like-minded organizations in Japan and abroad and disseminating the results of its work through public lectures, symposia, and publications.
