IRIS is a research center for strategic issues and international relations, and its activities cover three areas: research and expertise, conferences, and publications. The institute was created to contribute to research and public debate on strategic issues, a particularly underdeveloped domain in France; to provide independent expertise on current strategic developments; and to create a framework for dialogue among specialists from various professional and intellectual horizons: political leaders, senior civil servants, industrialists, military experts and academics- the key figures within the strategic community. This diversity in experience is both a deliberate choice and an IRIS aims to attract public opinion to international current affairs and thus promote better undrestanding. While maintaining its Parisian presence, IRIS has opened a branch in Lille within the Institut d'Etudes Politiques.
