The institute is named after dr. Jože Pučnik (1932–2003), thinker and politician, the central founder of Slovenian democracy and the state. Pučnik, through his life and work, had a decisive influence on Slovenia's development into a free and open society. Institute dr. Jože Pučnikje was founded in 2006 as an institution with the purpose of bringing together educators, scientists, artists, politicians and experts from various fields with the aim of raising the political culture in Slovenia. Through its activity, the IJP seeks to promote and support the free exchange of views on key issues in contemporary society that are important for the development of democratic thought.
