The Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies (IDSS) is a research centre of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS). Its faculty and research staff conduct both academic and policy-oriented research on security-related issues and developments affecting Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. IDSS currently hosts nine programmes that are grouped into three clusters, namely, The Asia Pacific (Regional Security Architecture, China, South Asia, United States); The Malay Archipelago (Indonesia, Malaysia); and Military and Security (Maritime Security, Military Transformations, Military Studies). The IDSS focuses its research on issues concerning critical and human security studies, political violence and terrorism, multilateralism and regionalism, non-traditional security, revolution in military affairs, mediation and conflict resolution, and international political economy.
