The Oswald von Nell-Breuning Institute for Economic and Social Ethics was founded in 1990 by the Sankt Georgen University of Philosophy and Theology. It conducts research and consults on policies from the perspective of Christian social ethics. It stands in the tradition of Catholic social teaching. A particular focus in the institute's social ethical work is business ethics. The main research areas at the institute are the future of employment and the welfare state as well as developments on the international financial markets and in the global economy as a whole.
