Strategic and Defence Studies Centre

SDSC
Canberra, Australia

The aim of SDSC is to further the development of strategic studies, both as an intellectual discipline and as a foundation for policy advice, by fostering an understanding and appreciation of the theoretical and historical background of war and conflict and by providing a detailed understanding of strategic and defense issues of relevance to Australia and the region. The center has special concern for issues in Australian defense policy and has expertise and interest in Australia's defense relationships with its Asian and South Pacific neighbors. Developing new conceptual tools to explain (and predict) post-Cold War strategic developments, both within the Asia-Pacific region and globally, is a focus of research. Further, SDSC aims to promote awareness of, and informed public debate on, strategic and defense issues and to promote strategic studies in Australia by developing postgraduate research and teaching on Asia-Pacific strategic affairs.
