TDRI was established to conduct policy research and disseminate results to the public and private sectors. It was conceived, created, and registered as a nonprofit and nongovernmental foundation. The institution provides technical and policy analysis that supports the formulation of policies with long-term implications for sustaining social and economic development in Thailand. TDRI's objectives are to: (1) conduct and promote policy research; (2) establish an information center; (3) establish appropriate research networks; (4) disseminate research results; and (5) remain nonpartisan. To meet its objectives, TDRI divides its research activities into six major areas: (1) human resources and social development; (2) international economic relations; (3) macroeconomic policy; (4) natural resources and environment; (5) sectoral economics; and (6) science and technology development. The institute also conducts projects on transportation, energy, state-owned enterprises, governance, etc. TDRI projects focus on basic technical research, policy issues and strategies, planning support, and regulatory and institutional reform.
