WIIW aims to undertake independent research on the economies of Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs), including the FSU. Since 1990, WIIW's mandate has grown to include the academic analysis of transformation in CEECs (transformation theory and alternative ways of transformation), overall European integration (EU enlargement, East Europe-South Europe comparisons), growth forecasts, the "catching-up" process; and the political economy of conflict areas (former Yugoslavia, the Balkans). An additional area of study is that of Asian transformation countries (in particular, China), identifying lessons from the Asian experience that can inform the catching-up process in Central Europe and Eastern Europe.
