The purpose\u00a0of this course is to assist evaluators and those commissioning evaluations to conceptualise, design and manage the implementation of appropriate and robust evaluations using a participatory, capacity building approach.<\/p>\n

What you will learn<\/h2>\n

The objectives of this course are to improve your:<\/h3>\n

  1. Understanding of evaluation design as having both\u00a0technical and process\u00a0perspectives.<\/li>\n
  2. Understanding of how the\u00a0types of evaluations\u00a0(e.g. design evaluation, implementation evaluation, summative evaluation, impact evaluation) should influence the evaluation design<\/li>\n
  3. Ability to select an\u00a0appropriate approach\u00a0for an evaluation, including both\u00a0qualitative\u00a0and\u00a0quantitative\u00a0approaches (e.g. document\/literature review, most significant change, outcome harvesting, contribution analysis and quasi-experimental evaluation design, etc.)<\/li>\n
  4. Ability to choose appropriate\u00a0data collection, sampling and data analysis methods\u00a0(qualitative and quantitative) to respond to key evaluation questions.<\/li>\n
  5. Improved understanding of\u00a0utilisation focused\u00a0evaluation\u00a0and how these can be practically applied through a\u00a0participatory, capacity building\u00a0evaluation process.<\/li>\n
  6. Ability to develop an\u00a0evaluation framework\/plan\u00a0based on evaluation questions and assessment criteria.<\/li>\n
  7. Ability to better\u00a0articulate\u00a0your\u00a0evaluation requirements\u00a0and\u00a0assess\u00a0the appropriateness of an\u00a0evaluation proposal.<\/li>\n
  8. Ability to assess quality of evaluation process and deliverables based on “indicators” of a good quality evaluation process (from terms of reference through to the utilisation of the evaluation)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Dena Lomofsky is a Development Sociologist, the Founder of Southern Hemisphere<\/a>, a leading socio- economic development consultancy, committed to social justice.\u00a0 She has more than 20 years’ experience in designing and conducting evaluations, providing support to organisations in strengthening their MEL systems and practice and training related topics. She is a skilled researcher, evaluator, trainer and facilitator with a special interest in participatory practices. Dena is the annual guest lecturer on Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation for the Masters in Department Studies (University of Cape Town) and her most recent clients include Comic Relief, the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, The Mastercard Foundation and the Community Organisation Resource Centre (CORC).<\/p>\n
