Objectives of the course 

We are all taking our facilitation processes online!  How do we maintain connection with participants?  How do we give and receive value out of our engagement in online meetings, workshops and processes? How do we transfer our facilitation skills into the online space? 

This introductory course will help you to make the best use of virtual opportunities to engage with people, to explore issues creatively, and to reach decisions.  We will consider some of the challenges in facilitating processes virtually, and share some tips and tools to make the virtual experience engaging, participatory and productive.

What will it cover?

This 2-hour session will consider how we can facilitate in a virtual environment, maintaining our values while we do so. It will cover:

  • Challenges in virtual events
  • Designing and Preparing an online facilitation process
  • Convening
  • Managing the meeting for participation, engagement, and productivity
  • Ending the meeting
  • Troubleshooting & Security
  • Further examples of methods and tools for engagement

Where, when and how?

This course will be delivered remotely online via Zoom. We are not providing a dial in option for this particular event: you will need to join via a Zoom app or an internet browser. A basic familiarity with Zoom is assumed.  Refer to if you need to know how Zoom works. Please contact us if you need any particular support to be able to fully participate.

  • Participants from US, Canada, Europe, as well as funders and evaluation consultancies in South Africa: $61 or ZAR 1070 excluding VAT

Practical skills for meaningful social change

Through our training programme, Southern Hemisphere has been providing practical skills for meaningful social change for 18 years. Now, in partnership with Orla Cronin Research, we are offering an introductory course on Participatory Virtual Facilitation to assist MEL Practitioners, Consultants, Project Managers, Researchers, Directors, Leaders, Planners and Development practitioners (and anyone trying to facilitate processes online). 

Trainer profile

Órla Cronin is a research psychologist, facilitator, trainer and consultant to NGOs and other civil society organizations. In over twenty years of facilitating, she has developed a broad toolkit of live and virtual facilitation methods. She has a deep commitment to participatory approaches e.g. Technology of Participation, World Café, Agile, Solution Focus, Open Space and Appreciative Inquiry. 

She facilitates live (eg. Armenian Centre for Human Rights organisational review), virtual (e.g. Barefoot Collective ‘virtual writeshop’) and ‘hybrid’ workshops (e.g. WWF organisational development virtual workshop – 19 organisational development practitioners globally, with 20 more joining from their ‘live’ meeting in Tanzania, and a global hybrid workshop on advocacy for Amnesty International).
