Think Tank Communications Health Check

July 27, 2018

This tool is designed to help think tanks and research institutes to refine and improve their communications. It evaluates a number of key areas: audiences, channels, messaging, systems, strategy, capacity and monitoring.

By answering a number of simple questions, the health check will help pinpoint areas to consider prioritising to help you communicate your research and support your brand. The analysis recognises that communication is a complicated process involving strategy, tactics and resources: in other words, it is not all about output.

All thinktankers are welcome to make use of this assessment, though communications staff and senior managers may be in a better place to answer all the aspects it covers. It should take about 15-20 minutes to complete and you will receive a comprehensive ‘diagnosis’ by email upon completion.

Think tanks and research institutes differ widely in their size, structure, objectives and approaches: some have a very clear media and public affairs focus, while others provide behind the scenes advisory services. Consider the results of this self-assessment within the context of your goals and organisational capacity, and remember that there is no formula for ‘doing comms’ that works for all.

If our questions, results or anything else in this tool could be improved, please let us know at [email protected]. And, finally, please note that the information you provide is confidential and any research publications resulting from the data will be anonymised.
