The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) is a Berlin-based, independent think tank and leading European provider of policy-oriented research on contemporary China. Founded by Stiftung Mercator, MERICS analyzes current trends in China’s international relations, economy, politics, and society and their implications for Europe.

In the second half of 2019, MERICS will start a new research cluster on Digital China. The cluster will assess the internal dynamics and the global impact of Chinas digital rise and emerging technologies, including the policy and regulatory environment, key Chinese political and economic actors, and specifically also the interdependence with foreign companies and markets. In order to develop this new cluster, MERICS seeks to fill the following position as soon as possible.

Key roles and responsibilities

Research

  • Conduct original research on China’s digital transformation with a strong focus on implications for Europe
  • Produce authoritative reports, policy analyses, media articles, academic publications and other written products on issues including patterns and trends in China’s digital policy and emerging technologies, also in a comparative global perspective, and the implications for Europe

Project development and outreach

  • Initiate and develop research project proposals, also for acquiring external funding
  • Serve as an expert commentator in the media and engage in public outreach through op-eds, public speaking, op-eds and other outlets
  • Participate in public events and engage in consultative meetings with policy makers and stakeholders

Experience and skills expected of the post holder

  • Experience in digital tech-related work environments (corporate, policy advice, consultancy, non-profit, etc.), preferably in or with regard to China – Strong academic background in the social sciences, public health, law or humanities with a China focus (MA or PhD)
  • Minimum of three years of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships)
  • Experience in living in China and/or working on China-related issues
  • Fluent professional English skills, a strong knowledge of modern Chinese (minimally HSK 4 or equivalent); knowledge of or willingness to learn German or one other European language will be an advantage – High degree of flexibility and willingness to work as part of a team

Other useful information

The candidate will contribute to digital and technology-related topics across all programs of MERICS, but would be administratively either be placed in the Foreign Relations, Economy or Society program.

Depending on relevant experience, the position will be filled at the level of senior research analyst or research analyst. Appointments will initially be for a fixed term of two years with a probationary period of six months.
