Since their founding by Andrew Carnegie over a century ago, the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs has worked to empower ethical principles as a way to discover common values and interests that can lead to a better future. As an independent, research-driven nonprofit, they set the global ethical agenda through their Impact Initiatives, Global Ethics Studio, Ethics Accelerator, Carnegie New Leaders (CNLs) program, and Ethics & International Affairs journal, serving as the world’s catalyst for ethical action. Creative and agile, the Carnegie Council is more than a traditional think tank – in addition to providing advice and ideas on large-scale issues, the Council acts as a convener and community builder, with more than 100 events and podcasts a year engaging global audiences to build a better world using the power of ethics.
The role
Partnering with the President, Board of Directors, and senior staff, the Director of Development and Philanthropic Partnerships will be the primary architect and executor of all fundraising initiatives and a philanthropic partnership strategy.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Serve as the primary architect and implementer for all fundraising initiatives.
- Partner with and support the President and Board of Directors to advance the Council’s fundraising goals.
- Develop and grow the pipeline of major gift donors and manage a portfolio of individual donors, including the direct solicitation of major gifts and planned giving.
- Orient new board members to their fundraising responsibilities and ensure that they receive the support they need to be successful volunteer fundraisers
- Create briefing memos, presentations, and other materials for senior leadership in preparation for donor meetings.
- Oversee institutional giving that identifies, cultivates, and sustains multi-year foundation partnerships.
- With the President oversee the planning, execution, and follow-up of virtual and in-person fundraising events.
- Partner with the Director of Communications to raise brand awareness and identify and target new audiences for fundraising purposes.
- Work with designated staff to leverage the Council’s owned channels (website, social media, direct mail, etc.) for annual appeals and other fundraising appeals as appropriate.
- Using the database as a fundraising tool, develop moves management strategies, identify capacity and wealth markers, build and manage the pipeline, identify donor attrition, and support a streamlined and scalable development effort.
- Track prospect and donor contacts and determine follow-up as needed.
- Establish development goals and milestones, and implement benchmarking and progress measurement procedures.
Experience and skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences, preferably in International Relations, Political Science, Philosophy, or related disciplines.
- Minimum 10 years of professional fundraising experience with significant major-gifts experience and success in leading or working closely on a substantial capital campaign.
- Track record of success in developing and implementing scalable fundraising plans, cultivating donors, and soliciting individual major gifts, as well as foundation support.
- Systems-oriented and data-driven leader with the ability to critically evaluate fundraising efforts.
- Ability to interact professionally with dedicated Board and staff members who have diverse backgrounds, professional skills, and perspectives.
- Exceptional writing, communication, and analytical skills.
- Familiar with nonprofit organizations and funders, particularly in New York City.
- Strong follow-through and attention to detail; proven ability to set and meet deadlines and benchmarks.
- Experience in database management and administration is strongly preferred.
