BIDS is a multidisciplinary organization that conducts policy-oriented research on development issues (mainly in the context of Bangladesh). BIDS serves as a conduit for the dissemination of development information through its library, publications, website, and seminar programs. Also, BIDS researchers directly contribute to the formulation of development policies by participating in government committees and task forces. BIDS's primary research focus has been on industry- and trade-related issues. Over time, with economic and social realities changing, the focus has expanded to include issues related to poverty, inequality, environment, agricultural development, labor issues, industrial development, food security and sustainable livelihood, water resources management, health, education, globalization, energy, gender, and empowerment. BIDS is governed by a high-powered board of trustees, with the director general acting as the chief executive. In addition to the statutory committees, there is an advisory committee of senior fellows that provides guidance in designing and implementing BIDS's professional programs.
