The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) is linked to the Ministry of Environment and integrates the National Environmental System (Sisnama). It is responsible for executing the actions of the National System of Conservation Units, and may propose, implement, manage, protect, supervise and monitor the conservation units established by the Union. It is also incumbent upon it to promote and execute programs for research, protection, preservation and conservation of biodiversity and to exercise the power of environmental police for the protection of federal Conservation Units.
