KIEP focuses on the international economy and its relationship with South Korea, advising the national government on all major international economic policy issues and serving as a warehouse of information on South Korean government policies pertaining to international economics. In addition, KIEP carries out research projects for foreign institutes and governments in all areas of the South Korean and international economies. Through its research, KIEP aims to examine international factors that threaten economic stability and develop appropriate countermeasures; develop trade policies aimed at increasing exports and expanding import liberalization; develop reform measures to attract foreign direct investment and refine corporate structures and expand overseas direct investment (ODI) to help South Korean businesses enhance their presence in the world economy; and analyze the economic trends of major countries and regions and evaluate their implications for Korea and its bilateral economic relations.
