RFN was established in 1989 with an aim to protect human rights and the environment, especially indigenous people and traditional populations of the world's rainforests. RFN is a legally and financially independent non-governmental organisation. Part of its work involves influencing policies and practices of governments, intergovernmental bodies and private enterprises to ensure that they are consistent with rainforest protection.
