HuMa – Society for the Reform of Community and Ecological Law

HuMa - Society for the Reform of Community and Ecological Law
Jakarta, Indonesia

HuMa is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization working on the issues of law reform in the field of natural resource management. The concept of law reforms initiated by HuMa emphasizes the importance of recognizing the rights of indigenous and local communities over natural resources as well as the diversity of social systems, cultures and laws in the procurement and management of natural resources and ecological preservation. HuMa believes that the process of law reform should involve indigenous and local communities as the main actors. HuMa has been founded by individuals from various backgrounds (activists, academics and lawyers) who are involved in the process of defining the theory behind environmental law and its practical applications in the field of natural resource management. HuMa's mission is: - To consolidate the capacity of the Legal Assistance to the People scheme through strategic partnerships; - Policy advocacy, campaigning and various models of legal education to counter the dominant discourse in law on the issue of land reform and natural resources; - To build a data center through both research and field experience.
